The disorder was first described in the 1960s by the Austrian physician Andreas Rett. Today Rett syndrome is classified as a pervasive Rett syndrome may be misdiagnosed as autism or cerebral palsy. A child affected with Rett syndrome normally follows a standard developmental path for the first 5 months of life. After that time development in communication skills and motor movement in the hands seems to stagnate or regress. This control is critical: Too little MECP2 protein leads to Rett, but too much results in MECP2 duplication syndrome, a condition that also causes intellectual disability, seizures, and autism traits.
In the later development of Rett syndrome autism sometimes becomes less prominent and there may also be clear differences as regards the quality of autistic behaviour in Rett syndrome and infantile autism. Rett syndrome is considered one of the autism spectrum disorders.

After that time development in communication skills and motor movement in the hands seems to stagnate or regress. Autopsies on the brains of these individuals indicate a pathology different from autism; however, children afflicted with Rett Syndrome often exhibit autistic-like behaviors, such as repetitive hand movements, prolonged toe walking, body rocking, and sleep problems. Both Rett’s Syndrome and autism are considered to be on the autism spectrum, due to sharing a lot of the same red flags such as developmental delays between eighteen months and three years old, sudden onset of regression out of nowhere, and the genetic component of both disorders.

It is characterized by normal early growth and development followed by a slowing of development, loss of purposeful use of the hands, distinctive hand movements, slowed brain and head growth, problems with walking, seizures, and intellectual disability. Signs of Rett syndrome that are also present in cerebral palsy (regression of the type seen in Rett syndrome would be unusual in cerebral palsy; this confusion could rarely be made): possible short stature, sometimes with unusual body proportions because of difficulty walking or malnutrition caused It is categorized as an autism spectrum disorder, but, unlike most forms of autism, Rett syndrome has a clear-cut cause—a mutation in a protein known as MeCP2.

It is categorized as an autism spectrum disorder, but, unlike most forms of autism, Rett syndrome has a clear-cut cause—a mutation in a protein known as MeCP2. Zhang and colleagues recently described the role of MeCP2 in forming important circuits within the brain known as inhibitory circuits.

Rett syndrome is a progressive, neurodevelopmental autism spectrum disorder, or ASD. The majority of affected individuals are female, and the main characteristics of this disorder are normal development followed by developmental regression. Rett syndrome is usually caused by a mutation in the gene encoding methyl-CpG-binding protein-2 (MECP2). Rett syndrome can also be caused by a mutation to the gene encoding cyclin-dependent kinase-like 5 (CDKL5).
